" Our mission is not to deal with obvious horrors , but to open the eyes of normal respectable men to evils which are escaping their consideration . " - George Bernard Shaw ( 1856 - 1950 )
Australia has the highest rate of medical error in the world according to the World Health Organisation's 2002 Report released late last year .
16% of our hospitalised patients will suffer a significant adverse event which is totally unrelated to their original medical condition . This translates as 1 patient in 6 , which is four times the reported occurrence of medical error incidents in the United States , and a full 6% higher than Britain's 10% error rate .
18 , 000 Australian patients die each year as a direct result of avoidable injuries and complications inflicted from withn our health system environments .
Another 50 , 000 Australian patients per year are left with permanent disabilities , and hundreds of thousands more are avoidably injured to some greater or lesser degree .
80 , 000 Australian patients per year are hospitalised due to medication errors , syphoning a massive $350m from the Federal Health Budget annually .
And these figures do not take into account the recognised errors which take place in other clinical outpatient settings such as GP surgeries , radiology suites , and other outpatient clinics where the error rate has been found to be at 23% in one Sydney study .
It is this Group's priority to inform and support the victims of avoidable medical injury and to advocate , in partnership with health system administrators ; health care professionals ; and concerned others , for reduction in the global incidence of iatrogenic disease , so that victim numbers are kept to the barest possible minimum. We advocate for the implementation of cost-effective , positive , and practical health reforms.
Our aim is to persuade the administrative bodies responsible for servicing our health care , to provide patient-safe facilities and minimum risk procedures . And , our purpose in developing this group is to offer a forum for the victims of avoidable medical injury , and their family members , to come together and exchange experiences ; support ; and health , legal , and patient safety information .
We are dedicated to practical health reform , and blame has no considered role on our Group's Agenda . But we unite , and raise our voices around the world , and we , " The victims " serve as a reminder to all that patient ppprotection within our current health systems is just not good enough .
If we are to hope for recognition and reform for the increasing problem of medical error , then we as victims , and concerned others , must be seen to care ; to have our voices heard and our concerns and ideas for system improvements not only noted , but acted upon .
This website is dedicated to the Support of victims of medical errors and avoidable medical injuries , and to their family members .
To providing access to information to health and legal information which will empower patients and victims , and enable them to make more fully informed health choices .
And to raising the profile of Iatrogenic Disease in the global health arena , so that patients of future years ; our families ; friends ; our children and grandchildren , will be safer under the benefits of open risk-management policies ; improved quality control in medical and staff training ; improved treatment facilities ; and consistent adverse event monitoring .

" People who soar are those who refuse to sit back , sigh and wish things would change . They neither complain of their lot nor passively dream of some distant ship coming in . Rather , they visualise in their minds that they are not quitters , they willo not allow life's circumstances to push them down and hold them under . " - Charles R Swindoll
