WELCOME to all members of the HOBDEN family and visitors. This page has been created to allow us all to learn more about The Hobden Heritage. My gg-grandfather was John Hobden (1790-1878). He had been a schoolmaster in Britain, served in the Royal Navy and taught navigation and worked in clerical positions in Van Diemen's Land. John Hobden was as a convict, arriving on "The Clyde" in December 1830. He was accused of stealing money from a letter, and was forced to leave behind in England a wife, Elizabeth, and six children. His second marriage was in 1850, to Ann Coline Fitzgerald. They had ten children, and their descendants have made notable contributions to Tasmanian society. Believe it or not, our community of Hobden researchers and family members numbers some 259. Our community site here is a tribute to all of your contributions but I owe a huge debt to Alan Hobden for his staunch support to all of us. The messages and pictures here hold great interest to so thanks to all of you who have uploaded contributions and questions. Roslyn Teirney |
