Emergency Group Shot Add any comments about your training class: We were the first group through in the 'New' YSL uniform. The grooming meisters were very strict.
Also, the Japanese market share was on the increase and we had 5 Japanese speakers in the class. We were required to do 4 Japan trips per bid period for the first 2 years flying, that is, until the bidding system came in, then basically most of us didnt get to Japan for the first 2 years of the bidding system until changes were made to trip allocation. Qantas lost many Japanese Pax to JAL over this period.

Add any comments about your training class: Ken Burton might best be remembered for his Mauritius basing at the end of which he barricaded himself in his apartment and eventually Qantas security were sent over to extract him and bring him home. He obviously enjoyed the basing!! Ian Neville died after only a few years of flying. He was being treated by the company doctor for an inner ear infection and died of a brain tumor. Paul Harris only flew for a few years and then left to work in the Department of Defence where he still is today. Back in the late 60's he claimed that the defence department knew more about us as crew members then we did about ourselves!! Some left during training and some left soon after. We were a mixed class with flight stewards and some of those were as follows: John Fletcher, Daryl Ganter (spoke to Daryl the other day and he recalled the class number and it would seem correct chronologically), Don Maginn, John Caporn, Fred Harry, Peter Eustace, Bill ? , ? Watts and several others whose faces I remember but whose names I don't. . Alan and Phil realised a great deal more service than was anticipated at our graduation in 1969 as our class instructors felt that further training might be appropriate before they could be set free to look after the travelling public and were held back for another week. In true Qantas fashion, they never finished the week as there no crew available and the guys were called out to do their first trips.Some things never change.
