Bruno Tonon  -- 3rd Steward July 1967 Class 101 -- 1970

I was also known as:-

Bruno

A History of My Time with Qantas:-

Started Training in class 101 and our instructors were George Wathem, Phill Penn, Ted White and Peter Herbert  whom we all disliked intensely, however he was probably only doing his job to keep us all in line.
Did my first trip to London with Neville Keegan as Chief and Mal McCardell as Second.  Mal kept advising me during the trip "Less Haste more Pace" and I have never forgotten it. On arrival in London someone on another crew  went sick and so my layover was shortened and I came back via Teheran with another crew.
Flew once on a DC4 to Norfolk and a few times on the Electra to NZ.
Loved Tahiti however went there only once not like my flatemate Roger Makepeace who was fortunate enough to go there 4 or 5 times in the  same time period.
Went to Saigon a few times on Military charters .
In 1970 had a London Basing and loved every minute of it with a great bunch of blokes.
I think I was the only steward to get kicked out of the Galley by the chief (John Sorrell) mid Atlantic because he did not trust my cooking. In fact he cooked the steaks himself and then asked me to continue. I hated the Ist class galley with passion.
Did a Royal flight with the Duke and Duchess of Kent however I was down aft and did not see much of them.
On return from the London I lost the passion for the long haul trips and regretfully I departed from Qantas in 1970 and went back to London for the next three years working in the Film Industry.

My Time Since Qantas:-
I inherited ( Navigator Lofty Brackers flat in Red Lions Square, Holborn -Rossetti the Poet once lived there) and returned to London for the next 3 years. Gone were the days of fun and laughter as I now had to get a real job and pay all the travel bills myself and work long hours for a menial wage without any perks.
I worked in the UK Film Industry for 3 years. Fortunate to work on 2 major movies one with Elisabeth Taylor, and the other with Sean Connery and 2  other smaller  films.
Returned home finally for good in late 1973 and worked on the second Alvin Purple picture here in Melbourne. Finally realised I was not going to make Director or Producer because of lack of talent, discipline and confidence.
Met my wife here in Melbourne and because she seemed more educated than me I decided to go to Latrobe University to get an Arts Degree. It didn't cost anything in fact they paid you to study during the Whitlam years of govt. I tried to Major in Psychology however my entrance marks were too low so I was guided to do Philosophy.
I was dissilusioned with my time at University and when I graduated  Arts/Diploma of Teaching I was more confused then when I first started studying.
I taught 1 year at Collingwood High school as an Emergency teacher till I was fortunate to get a Managers position in the Inbound Division of Atlantic and Pacific Travel and stayed there for 10 years+.
These were very enjoyable years dealing with International tourism into Australia. I would sometimes run into crews at Melbourne Airport and when ever I wanted a free ticket to Sydney Ian Burness (Ex Qantas Chief) was always very obliging via Australian Airlines.
After the 6 months Pilot strike and Hawkes turbulent economic recession I was retrenched and given a small package .

I decided to work 3 days a week in TAFE  where previouslly I had taught part time in the Supervison Certificate area. Semi retirement was very enjoyable but after a few years I ran out of monies so I decided to go back full time .
I taught in Busines Studies and the Management area during the introduction of Quality systems into Australian business culture.

Last year I was fortunate to have 3 1/2 months long Service leave and my wife and I  travelled to Europe. It was my second Honeymoon, and it was love all the way till we hit Italy and then we became a little ratty with each other into the 3rd month but we survived  with great memories. On returning to OZ we flew Qantas from HGK and boy did that crew work on that full flight. Nothing like our time in the 707's with 96 max in economy, where we had more leisurely time to ourselves.

I have been happilly  married for nearly 30 years and have 2 boys and a girl. My eldest son is a Civil engineer, my daughter is finishing her Arts degree studying in Italy, and my youngest is like me he doesn't know what he would like to do.
I often see Tony McArthur, Roger Makepeace, and on occasions Alan Inglis who lives in Brisbane and its great to reminisce about the good old Charlie Q days when life was a breeze, the world was only hours away and youthful optimism was the norm of the day.

I still teach in Tafe (near Melbourne Airport) mainly in Advertising and the Business Plan area. Often when I look up at the sky to see those gleaming beautiful silver tubes hovering over the College preparing for landing, I think of  that wonderful experience working for Qantas many years ago. Those great  funny blokes and gals I worked with and met. It all seems like it happened yesterday.

Chris Harris  -- C/S 1963 -- 1983

I was also known as:-

Crystal

A History of My Time with Qantas:-

I Joined QANTAS April 1st, 1963 leaving May 1983, after twenty wonderful years of flying and off line Training.

My Time Since Qantas:-
Both Don and I have been at  "Blackall Lodge" Mapleton, Queensland  for 21 years as of the 14th of this month,  when the house was completed, living in Queensland 23 years.
Mapleton is situated on the Blackall Range, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, about a half hour drive west of Maroochydore.

"Blackall Lodge" is our residence, Mr. Alan Kitchen calls it the Green House, as he did not know the house no. etc, we did receive his mail though.
Don used to fly with Mandated Airlines in New Guinea, way back when and then went to East  West Airlines in Armidale then to Sydney, we moved to Qld in 1980 or there abouts.
I flew until 1983 and Don was managing a Travel Agency at Caloundra for about seven years, decided quit the rat race and opened a small gift shop at Montville,  that was twelve years ago.

Re the wedding at Hong Kong, I was best man for Norm Collins and Miki Lee, what a session that turned out to be, I think Geoff King, Peter Hobday and Clive Ward were also in attendance, along with a few others. Miki's parents were art dealers.
Norm has since re-married and living at Port Stevens.

I had quite a few nights out with Carlotta whilst she was in HKG, a good friend of mine, Richard De Silva was her choreographer and we did spend quite a few wild nights out on the town with her.

Ah! how the memories come flooding back, thank you for prompting them for me, I must say we all did know how to enjoy ourselves didn't we.
Love to all. Crystal

Christopher Dwyer  -- 31-03-1965 -- 27-02-1987

I was also known as:-

Chris

A History of My Time with Qantas:-

Joined Qantas in 1965 and took early retirement in 1987. I had a Bermuda basing in 1969 and then London in 1982. I spent 2 years in cabin crew training. It was the best years of my life without a doubt.

My Time Since Qantas:-
Well, a long story, but will keep it as brief as possible. I left in 1987 and moved home to Eumundi, Qld, where I bought a courier run that operated from Tewantin to Rainbow Beach 3 times a week, taking the magic run along the beach. Became an expert at crossing the sand onto the boards around Rainbow Beach, but not much in the way of goods and parcels.
Next job was a partnership with a builder to build a block of units at Redcliffe out of Brisbane. Enjoyed the project enormously, but not too good for the cash reserves.
Headed back to Sydney and joined an air conditioning firm which was very interesting, and I learnt how an air conditioner worked and how to sell them, but the reserves weren't doing too well.
Headed further south into the Southern Highlands and bought a bicycle shop which struggled to make money, but I added a coffee shop into it called Cafe DeRaillieur which did very well, but then presented the problem of repairing bikes and the trying to do Devonshire teas. Not a good look!
Next worked in a newsagency for over 3 years doing the early morning opening. Great customers and good people to work with, but in the end the hours and lack of sleep got to me.
Was approached to join the local Tourism organisation as Supervisor and have been there ever since. Cant say I enjoy an office job as I am very much an out door person, but it is a job and these days it is good to have one.
Have also been actively involved with my local community in many projects which I have enjoyed enormously and get much pleasure from.
Do I miss Qantas, you bet I do, but more than the company it was the great people and charcters that I met and worked with over the 22 years that I was there. Like everyone I guess it is those special memories that made it all so unique. Am enjoying enormously this web site which I think is fantastic and looking forward to getting some good chats going.

Thank to you all, Chris Dwyer.

Clyde Bevan  -- Trainer 1957 -- 1991

I was also known as:-

A History of My Time with Qantas:-

I flew as Cabin Crew from 1957 till 1970.  Then went into in Cabin Crew training as as an instuctor. Moved to Cabin Crew briefing, onto Inflight services then to Inflight standards. Retiring in 1991.

My Time Since Qantas:-
On my retirement in 1991.  I went to tec and did a computer course for 2 years, then my leaving certificate.  This was done at the direction of Robin as she was concerned that I may become a couch potato. Then back to several more years on computers.
I also help UNICEF  one day a fortnight at the jet base, both Robin and I teach seniors how to operate computers so as they can compete with their Grand children and I help with a tecnical class at our Seniors Computer Club. I wiith a friend restore old computers, I give these to people who do not have a computer and are trying to decide wether to buy or not. These computers are of the older variety and would not suit some of us keener computer buffs. This does not leave me with a lot of free time but I am enjoying what I do.
