Passenger lends a hand mid-flight to lock the door on a 747

A passenger had to help cabin crew secure an unlocked door during a Qantas flight from Cairns to Tokyo earlier this month.

The report in the Sydney Morning Herald said that aviation investigators will decide over the next few days whether to carry out an in depth investigation into the incident which happened on April 2.

Cabin crew on the Boeing 747 flight from Cairns to Nagoya noticed a red warning light that warned of problems with the exit door.

The door was checked but staff could not find anything wrong with it.

It was only as they neared Nagoya airport, south of Tokyo that they realised the door handle had become unlocked.

A Qantas spokesman confirmed that a passenger helped a flight attendant shut the door handle.

The plane, carrying 373 people, landed safely and returned to Cairns promptly.

The Qantas spokesman said that a pressure blowout would be structurally impossible because of other locking mechanisms in place.
