Capacity 15,000 crowds turn up often and 1,000's watch from outside for Kumul' internationals. Papua New Guinea Kumuls' Rugby League made it to the quarter final of the World Cup 2000 in Europe, in England and France. 50,000 people greeted them back home. Papua New Guinea have produced some world stars in RL such as Adrian Lam, Marcus Bai and so on. Infact, PNG might be facing New Zealand Kiwis' in two Tests this year. Rugby Union is not very popular in PNG and loads of NRL players from Australia and even New Zealand are household names in PNG. TV coverage, radio coverage and paper coverage of Rugby League in PNG is very good indeed, impressive. 5,000 people turned up at the airport to greet the Australian Kangaroos' at Port Moresby last year. The beat the KUmuls' 54-12 but were only 18-6 up at half time were the world champions. Fitness beat PNG though. 15,000 capacity turned up, huge TV audiences and although Channel Nine in Australia had the rights, they never broadcasted the match which was unusual for them. Brad Fittler, Darren Lockyer and Andrew Johns are like GOD's and massive icons and idols in PNG sport. So is Mal Meninga who visited just last month. PNG are playing a weakened England or U21 squad while their Great Britain and Ireland team play you Kiwis' in England. A PNG Residents' side is playing the Junior Kangaroos' at SFS this year before the Australia Kangaroos' - Great Britain Lions' Test on July 12th, Friday. Can't wait man. | 5/18/02 11:36am |
