Mainly small gold, but occasional larger pieces are still being found. The area between the road and the main dam is still producing, and the white pipe clay heaps are good for high frequency VLF's. Use small coils for best effect. For SD's and GP's use the 8" or 11" mono's. In less overgrown areas (let me know if you find one!) you can try a larger mono, but if you're swinging a GP keep it locked in Sensitive. Interference can be a problem, so Coiltek AI coils or ML DD's in Cancel are the go. There are plenty of targets on the diggings close to the power line, so there must be gold still sitting there.

Gold was been found in most gullies in the fossicking area with Watts, Speck, and Spring Gullies being most kind to detector operators. Smaller bits turn up in Sailors, but it easily gets water logged during winter. Being so close to Adelaide it has received a hammering, so patient thorough detecting is required. Watts gully is fairly quiet and monoloops work well, but in most other areas the ground is very mineralised so DD's work best. Since the release of the GP series, more gold has been found, as lots of pieces are ironstone specimens which can give very weak signals, so don't be suprised when you have a decent bit of a few grams sitting in your hand that sounded like a fly shit!
Gold can be panned/sluiced from Dead Horse, Rocky, and Sailors Gullies during wet periods.
A permit is required from the Ranger's Office.

Multi-ounce nuggets have been found here, but as is the case with most fields mainly smaller bits remain. Several gullies, the richest being Foster's and Golden Point are still yielding odd bits using the latest technology. 11" - 18" DD coils are best, but most areas are very overgrown, so you have to use a smaller coil - the 10" elliptical DD's are ideal. Some beautiful crystalline nuggets have also been detected in years gone by.

Several areas were worked for alluvial gold, and most of the surrounding ground is potentially auriferous. There is a good possibility for new patches but most areas are on private land, so one really has to do their homework.
The lack of water, remoteness, and patchy nature of the gold are all reasons why the old timers didn't develop the area to its full potential.
